Willmar Schools is starting a work-based learning, On-the-Job-Training program targeting diverse Willmar High School seniors in CTE pathways. Students will embark on guided tours of local businesses, followed by paid internships (20-25 hours/week) and mentorship.
This program aims to increase career awareness and exploration, develop job-specific skills and work ethic, enhance employability and post-graduation success, address the local skills gap and promote diverse workforce representation.
The key activities include guided tours of diverse CTE businesses fostering career exploration, students select preferred businesses for internships based on interests, and mentors guide students in developing job-specific skills and professional communication.
Willmar's On-the-Job Training program, designed for 25 high school seniors, directly addresses the critical need to connect young talent with local career opportunities in manufacturing, animal science, plant science, and healthcare.
This initiative empowers our students by providing them with practical hands-on experience and real-world skills through supervised work experience. This exposure helps them develop essential workplace skills, industry-specific knowledge, and a strong work ethic, making them more competitive in the job market.
By working across diverse industries, students gain firsthand insights into different career paths. This allows them to discover their interests and aptitudes, leading to informed career decisions aligned with local opportunities.
Upon graduation, these students will be equipped with valuable experience and professional connections, enhancing their resumes and interview skills. This makes them attractive candidates for positions in the local workforce, contributing to a skilled and ready-to-work talent pool.
By engaging partners in these ways, we create a collaborative environment that fosters student learning, connects them with local career opportunities, and delivers substantial benefits for all participants. This project thrives on the combined expertise and resources of businesses, educational institutions, and the broader community, ultimately contributing to a stronger local/regional workforce.
