A partnership between Redwood Valley High School and the City of Redwood Falls Police Department has received a LYFT Career Pathways Innovation award to develop and implement an Intro to Law Enforcement course. This program introduces students to the criminal justice system and the physical and psychological requirements to become a peace officer while providing hands-on experiences and direct career insights.
Program Overview
The Intro to Law Enforcement course gives students a foundational understanding of law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Taught by a Redwood Falls Police Department officer, the course covers both the physical and psychological demands of the profession.
- Ride-alongs with police officers
- Field trips, including visits to the Mall of America Security Center
- Guest speakers and presentations from law enforcement professionals
- Hands-on training in situational awareness, defensive tactics, and communication skills
The course is held in the evenings and on weekends at Redwood Valley High School, allowing flexibility for students to participate while balancing other commitments. Students also receive 3 college credits through a partnership with Minnesota West Community and Technical College.

- 10 students have participated in the Intro to Law Enforcement course since its launch.
- Students gained direct exposure to law enforcement careers and real-world experiences through ride-alongs, training sessions, and community events.
