The Minnesota River Valley CTE Collaborative schools (Montevideo, MACCRAY, RCW, YME, and Lakeview), Friendship Homes, Ice Castle and other industry partners have received a $50,000 LYFT Pathways award to assist with the purchase of a fully equipped construction trailer and to develop a construction trades course for high school students.
In the course, students will explore design considerations and develop hands-on building skills by shifting back and forth between the design studio and build site. Throughout the year students will also tour local facilities and construction sites. Space to hold the class will be located at Friendship Homes in Montevideo and will be taught by a construction trades teacher from YME high school. Ice Castle Fish House will provide opportunities for the class to observe their production methods for building fish houses. This semester class will be offered for one high school credit and articulated for college credit.
During the 2019-20 school year, seven students took this course.
