A partnership between Hendricks High School, Lynd Junior High, Estelline High School, Cedrics Restaurant, and Hendrick’s Bakery were awarded $40,800 to purchase industry based culinary equipment/supplies and develop a year-long ProStart Program; and plan for annual summer career experiences for junior high students that provide exposure to the food industry.
ProStart is an industry recognized chef training program for high school students. ProStart teaches not only culinary skills, but also the business aspects of the foodservice industry. The program connects students with industry leaders, provides opportunities for scholarships and perhaps most importantly, prepares young people for careers as restaurant owners, managers, chefs and positions.
ProStart students enjoy hands-on work, on-the-job training through mentorships, interaction with guest presenters and field trips to area restaurants and foodservice suppliers. They have the opportunity to obtain a Certificate of Achievement at the end of the two-year program upon successful completion of testing and industry work experience. The courses will be articulated for college credit and the program will also partner with the SMSU Culinology program to help students understand the pathways to the food service industry.
During the 2018-19 school year, 16 students took this course.
