Medical Careers - Wabasso and Red Rock Central Schools

A partnership between Wabasso and Red Rock Central High Schools, Redwood Area Hospital and Fixen Health Enhancement Center has received a $24,732 LYFT Pathways award to develop and implement two semester-long courses to introduce students to Medical Careers.

This course is of high interest to students at each school, but neither was able to offer or sustain it on their own. Funds will be used for curriculum, medical supplies and equipment, a portion of student travel costs, and a portion of the instructor’s salary. According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), there were 14,413 vacant positions in the healthcare and healthcare support occupations in the fourth quarter of 2017 and 650 of those vacancies were in Southwest Minnesota. This one-credit high school course will include classroom instruction, community-based labs, field trips to medical and health care facilities, and job shadowing experiences. Students from Red Rock Central will be bussed to Wabasso four days per week for the course.

In the fall of 2019, seven students took this course.

During the 2021-22 school year, seven students took this course.
