Fairmont, Truman and Granada-Huntley-East Chain school districts, in partnership with Fairmont Ford, Hawkins Chevrolet, Elizabeth Chevrolet and Minnesota West Community and Technical College were awarded a $50,000 LYFT Pathways grant to start an Automotive Academy.
Initially, classes will take place on Saturdays, beginning January 2020. A summer session also will take place. Business partners and college staff will serve as mentors for the program. A portion of the funds will be spent to modernize the technical equipment, so students are better prepared to work on electric and hybrid cars. The program is based on the Welding Academy that the partnering schools have successfully implemented in the past.
During the 2021-21 school year, 69 students took this course.
