Intro to Medical Careers - MCC and Fulda Schools

A partnership between Murray County Central Schools, Fulda Public Schools, and Murray County Medical Center was awarded a $16,793.84 LYFT Pathways grant to design and conduct a one-semester Introduction to Medical Careers course in the Fall of 2019.

Students will meet at the Murray County Medical Center in Slayton and the Fulda MCMC Clinic two days each week for labs and guest speakers. The instructor will travel between the two sites each week. The other three days will be spent completing on-line assignments and participating in job shadowing in health care facilities in their home communities. Students from the two schools will meet together several times throughout the semester for joint tours, labs, and field trips. The class will be for one high school and two articulated college credits and will be based on the Minnesota Health Care Core Curriculum (HCCC).

The curriculum consists of seven modules:
  • Awareness and sensitivity to clients’ needs including mental health issues
  • Behaviors for success in the healthcare industry
  • Teamwork and communication skills including conflict management
  • Healthcare ethics
  • Healthcare safety and standard precautions
  • Respect for staff and client diversity
