A LYFT Pathways grant in the amount of $42,900 was awarded to Central Minnesota Christian, Community Christian Schools, Duininck Inc., Dannen Slagter Construction and Midwest Outdoor Resorts for the development of a high school construction trades program.
Students will develop their knowledge and skills in various construction trades through the building of a 16’ x 40’ cabin. Instructional units and hands-on learning will cover framing, roofing, siding, electrical, plumbing, and finishing. The class will also offer tours at a variety of local businesses spanning multiple industries in the region.
Midwest Outdoor Resorts will be providing the plans and materials for this project. The cabin will be constructed in a facility in Prinsburg, owned by Duininck, Inc. Once completed, the cabin will be moved to the resort location. Dannen Slagter Construction will serve as project lead, instructing the students on the various aspects of safety in the workplace, how construction projects flow from start to finish, and also instructing and supervising the hands-on work, from framing to finishing. Business partners are committed to offer this opportunity for students on an annual basis.
