Ag Drone Technology - Canby and Montevideo Schools

A partnership between Canby and Montevideo High Schools, Helena Chemical Company, Lake Area Technical Institute, Buffalo Ridge Aviation, and the Canby Pilots Club have been awarded $25,555 in LYFT Pathway funds to expand an Aviation class to include students from Montevideo High School; and to develop a Drone Technology course for students from both schools.

It is estimated that 30 students will be served in the first year of the courses. The one semester courses will be offered live at Canby High School and through distance learning, hands-on labs and industry-based tours. Students will log hours on a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified flight simulator and, if interested, can eventually take the FAA Knowledge Test. Drone technology is now being used in a wide range of career fields, including law enforcement, search and rescue operations, cartography, insurance, aerial photography, and agriculture. By partnering with Helena Chemical Company students will experience drone usage in a variety of work activities, including field scouting and field mapping. Students may also have the opportunity to expand this experience through an agronomy internship.

In the Spring of 2019, six students took this course.

In the Spring of 2020, 14 students took this course.

During the 2020-21 school year, ten students took this course.

During the 2021-22 school year, nine students took this course.
