Medical Careers Program in Southwest Minnesota Builds Skills, Confidence, and Community Impact
The Medical Careers Program in Southwest Minnesota is more than just a career exploration course. Thanks to a LYFT Career Pathways grant and strong local partnerships, students from Adrian, Hills-Beaver Creek, Edgerton, Luverne, and Pipestone high schools are gaining valuable real-world experience that builds both skills and character.
Throughout the school year, students in the program partnered with A.C.E. of SWMN (Advocate, Connect, Educate), which enriches the lives of older adults through community engagement. With support from Linda Wenzel at ACE and Carrie Overgaard at Sanford Hospice, students were required to complete a minimum of five hours of community service. Many went above and beyond, logging 10 or more hours.
Student Volunteers Making a Difference
In October, ten students volunteered to host "Birthday Bingo" for residents at Poplar Creek and The Oaks senior living communities. They created birthday bags, delivered them door-to-door, and served cake and ice cream while celebrating with the residents.
In April, the entire class participated in “Senior to Senior Speed Dating,” a creative and heartfelt event where students and older adults exchanged life stories, experiences, and wisdom. A total of 35 residents joined in, creating meaningful connections across generations.
Students also volunteered at local food shelves, the Palace Theater, hospice care programs, and community events. These experiences provided life-changing lessons in compassion, service, and leadership.
Scholarships and Future Leadership
The impact of this program continues to grow. Linda Wenzel recently selected two students from Kate Anderson’s class to serve as student ambassadors for Red Cross blood drives next year. Both students, juniors raised by single mothers, will each receive a $2,500 scholarship. One of them, Ella, will also serve as a teaching assistant next year.
These stories are a powerful example of how the Medical Careers Program in Southwest Minnesota is preparing students for life, not just a job. Through hands-on learning, service, and leadership, students are discovering their strengths and building brighter futures.
