On January 16, 2025, educators, industry professionals, and students gathered at the Tatonka II & III Rooms in Jackpot Junction, Morton, MN, for the LYFT’n Up Career ConneCTEd Excellence in SW/WC Minnesota Conference. This day-long event, organized by SWWC Service Cooperative, was a celebration of collaboration, innovation, and dedication to empowering the next generation through meaningful career pathways.
A Morning of Inspiration
The conference began with registration and a networking breakfast, setting the stage for an engaging day ahead. Attendees were warmly welcomed by Robert Larson, representing the Tribal Council for Lower Sioux, and Eriann Faris, CTE Project Coordinator for LYFT Career Pathways. Their opening remarks underscored the importance of education-industry partnerships in preparing today’s students for tomorrow’s workforce.
The keynote presentation by Mark C. Perna, a renowned author and expert on education and workforce development, was a highlight of the morning. Known for his dynamic and inspiring delivery, Mark crafted a tailored experience for the audience, ensuring his message resonated deeply with everyone in the room. His keynote emphasized the critical importance of creating education-industry connections and preparing students to thrive in an evolving workforce.
Mark’s unique approach aims to inspire action, not just reflection. He engages his audience in a way that culminates in a standing ovation—not for his ego but to solidify the impact of his strategies and insights. This shared moment of solidarity reinforces attendees' commitment to applying the lessons learned. Mark’s session wasn’t just a speech; it was a game-changing experience, thoughtfully designed to maximize engagement before, during, and after the event. His actionable strategies left the audience energized and equipped to make meaningful changes in their communities.
Engaging Insights and Interactive Learning
After a short break, attendees delved into labor market trends with Luke Greiner, Labor Market Analyst for the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED). His interactive session, “We’re Not Playing a Zero Sum Game,” energized the room while providing valuable data on the current labor market. (pictured at left)
The session was followed by the heart of the conference—“Student Success Stories: Voices from the Pathways.” Students shared powerful testimonials about their experiences in LYFT Career Pathways projects, illustrating the transformative impact these programs have had on their career trajectories. From medical careers to diesel mechanics, their stories highlighted the real-world benefits of education-industry collaboration. (pictured below right)
Afternoon Showcases and Workshops
Following a networking lunch, the afternoon featured a showcase of innovative projects in a World Café style format. Participants explored eight exemplary projects, engaging in small-group discussions to learn about best practices and successful collaboration efforts. The featured projects (several pictured below) included:
- Youth Career Connector - MRVCTEC, Canby, DB and LqPV
- West Central Minnesota Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (CEO) and Lyon/Murray County CEO
- Diesel Mechanics - Wabasso Schools
- Renewed Memories - YME and RCW
- Intro to Law Enforcement - Redwood Area Schools
- Foundations of Medical Careers - Montevideo Schools
- Medical Careers Program
- Minnesota River Valley Career & Technical Education Collaborative (MRVCTEC)
Attendees had the opportunity to rotate through five projects, gaining insights from both handouts and posters that highlighted each initiative’s achievements and potential.
The day concluded with an interactive workshop led by Cheryl Glaeser, owner of Achieve Consulting. This session encouraged attendees to reflect on actionable steps and key connections they could pursue to further develop career pathways in their own communities. Participants left with clear goals, such as identifying a key individual to connect with and a specific action to take upon returning to their organizations.
Closing Remarks and Looking Ahead
The conference wrapped up with closing remarks that summarized key takeaways and announced upcoming initiatives. The energy in the room reflected a collective commitment to building stronger, more connected career pathways for students across the region.
